The value of, well, Values.
What are some of your top values? I'll tell you mine if you tell yourself yours.
One of the most important things I've discovered, thanks to the help of 21/64, is that understanding our top values is a primary driver in how we will react with the world. What do I mean by that? Well- if one of our top values is independence, there is a very good chance that we may be a solopreneur, or work best in individual situations. We may prefer "solitary" sports, like running, swimming, etc., to say group sports like soccer, and baseball. We are very focused on paving our own way, and though we are open to advice, we feel the need to "do it ourselves," most of the time, rather than ask for help. But if you value collaboration more than independence, perhaps you find yourself working in an environment where groups are highly necessary, or playing team sports on the weekend, and only making a decision once you've heard the group.
Some of my top values:
- Independence
- Compassion (or helping others)
- Learning
These three values are top drivers in my life. I definitely want to be an independent person, and tend to thrive when I'm focused on making sure I can accomplish goals on my own. But often, those goals involve helping other people (no wonder I'm focusing on a business model that is consulting (independence) to families (others who need my help)). And anyone who knows me personally knows that I thirst for knowledge. Both to help me in my career goals, but also just to have. Seriously, I read more than almost anyone I know (who doesn't read for a living).
So, what are your values? Try to take a look at this list and choose your top five. How do they manifest in your life? If they aren't manifesting in your life the way you want, what does that feel like to you? How can you adjust so that they are more prominent in how you conduct your day to day? In how you view your long term goals? What would it look like if you quickly thought of your values before you made your decisions? Would it change them?
Just some food for thought on this very humid NY day.
